The employment outlook for university professors in the Laval region is good for the 2014–2016 period. Labour needs will stem primarily from positions vacated by university professors who will be retiring. The share of professors aged 55 and over was higher than that of workers in all occupations combined (25% as opposed to 17%), at the time of the 2011 Census. Not many opportunities will stem from employment growth. Some positions will become vacant since some university professors will move to other occupations. Experience and training in university teaching provide access to a wide range of positions related to their field of teaching and to promotions to management positions in the university teaching sector. However, career paths are usually developed within the occupation. Nearly 80% of university professors from Laval are working in Montréal universities.

These openings will be available to holders of a doctorate in the specialty to be taught. Affiliation with an association or a professional order can be required of professors who teach in fields where the scope of practice is regulated, such as medicine, law, engineering, psychology or architecture. Post-doctoral internships at a university, as well as research experience and publishing research articles and reports in scientific journals constitute major assets. This occupation is experiencing serious shortages in disciplines such as engineering, computer science and medicine. These shortages stem to a large extent from competition from universities in the United States and in the rest of Canada, and the effects of competition from the rest of the labour market; they offer better compensation to these highly qualified professionals and often recruit potential candidates before they have completed the required courses to teach in a university. Few positions will be filled by unemployed university professors, since unemployment occurs almost exclusively in summer and vanishes when the demand for professors is at its height. Some positions could be filled by immigrants who meet the requirements of the universities.

Employment in this occupation varies according to changes in government spending, the number of young people who have reached the age to attend university, that is, those who are 20 to 29 years old, their rate of school attendance and the supply of highly specialized labour. As a result of the stability of university enrolment, the demographic increase in young people aged 20 to 29 and the growing participation of foreign students, it is expected that university student cohorts will rise slightly between now and 2016. According to the Quebec Department of Higher Education, Research and Science, the number of university students at the doctorate level is expected to increase during the period under review. The growth of this succession pool can only serve to facilitate the renewal of the supply of specialized labour

During the major part of the 1990s, Quebec universities had to deal with a restricted budget environment. Since then, higher education expenditures have allowed for the maintenance of certain programs that were at risk in universities far removed from major centres, for an increase in the number of enrolments in certain high-demand fields, such as medicine and nursing, and for a slight decrease in the ratio of the number of students per professor in all universities. The increase in university research spending has made it possible to devote more time to research and, by that very fact, fostered employment in this occupation. Possible government budget cuts could, however, lead to a drop in demand for this occupation over the coming years.

Given all these trends, it is expected that the number of university professors will increase somewhat over the coming years.
