- Air North is adding regular passenger service from Whitehorse to Victoria starting on May 18, 2018. The Victoria stops will be added to the airline's existing route to Kelowna, B.C.

Construction is underway for upgrades to the Pioneer Cemetery in downtown Whitehorse. The current phase includes building a new gateway and is expected to be completed in spring.The Government of Yukon is currently conducting a 2017-18 Yukon Visitor Exit Survey. The year-long study will provide the tourism sector with current and reliable information to plan for the future, develop programs and products, and market Yukon.
The Kwanlin Dün First Nation is planning a new public cardlock fuel station on a parcel of settlement lands along the Alaska Highway, near the Whitehorse airport. Pending approvals, the opening is planned for September 2018.The first of three affordable housing complexes in the River Bend area of Whitehorse has been completed. The second building is scheduled to open in December, and the third in early next year.The Kluane First Nation is moving ahead with plans to build three wind turbines near Kluane Lake following a final $1M funding commitment from the Government of Canada. Construction is scheduled to start in June 2018.
The Government of Yukon intends to make radon testing and mitigation a licensing requirement for child care centres and family day homes in the territory; and is in the process of completing testing programs at four schools across the territory with more extensive testing planned for this winter.

The new $14M Salvation Army Centre of Hope facility has opened in Whitehorse. The facility will have about 20 staff working onsite and will cost about $2M to operate annually.
The Yukon government has formed a Midwifery Advisory Committee tasked with examining policy and regulatory options to govern midwifery in the territory. Midwifery is a regulated profession in all jurisdictions except Yukon and Prince Edward Island.Winterlong Brewing Co., a Whitehorse-based micro-brewery, is expanding for the third time in two-and-a-half years in an effort to meet demand for its products. The brewery has added fermentation tanks and doubled the capacity of its bottling line.
The Mastercard Foundation is providing $4.6M to Yukon College for a program to increase the number of Indigenous Yukoners going to the school and help them graduateThe Government of Yukon and the Yukon Medical Association have reached a new five-year agreement valued at $6.9M. The agreement includes further integration of nurse practitioners into the care system and discussion on the regulation of midwifery.
The new $72M emergency department at the Whitehorse General Hospital is expected to open in January 2018. The new emergency department has 17 treatment rooms compared to 10 in the existing department.The Government of Yukon has received interest from six companies for the construction of a redundant fibre optic line for the territory. Two routes are currently under consideration for the proposed line.The Government of Yukon has agreed to cover the extra $1M needed to fix the Ross River footbridge. The contract has been awarded to North Vancouver-based Surespan Construction Ltd.
The Government of Yukon has awarded $182,210 for community projects. The funds are expected to create over 2,235 hours of employment for more than 35 people throughout the territory.The Government of Yukon has awarded the contract to operate a mobile abattoir to Tum Tum's Black Gilt Meats. The mobile abattoir service allows local farmers to slaughter their livestock on their own property in an inspected facility.The Government of Yukon has extended six oil and gas permits for one year. The permits make up the core of the $100M-plus exploration program in northern Yukon.The Government of Yukon plans to open the Whistle Bend continuing care facility in Whitehorse next year. Save-On-Foods opened a store in Whitehorse on August 25, 2017. The location has a total of 210 employees - approximately 40% of those full-time, with the remainder part-time. They include 10 managers for various departments.Job fairs were recently held in Whitehorse and Mayo for positions at the Eagle Gold Project at Dublin Gulch. The available positions ranged from construction to security operations.
Construction is underway on the $40M Victoria Gold Corp.'s Phase 1 Eagle Gold Mine project. Victoria Gold awarded numerous construction contracts, including significant participation by the First Nation of Nacho Nyak Dun Development Corporation.
Construction will soon begin on the first phase of the Victoria's Eagle Gold Project located north of Mayo. About 300 people will be at the site at the peak of construction.The new territorial government has put a plan to tear down the former Alexander McDonald Lodge care facility in Dawson City on hold. The previous government awarded a $226,000 contract to a Whitehorse company to demolish the building.
The Government of Yukon has awarded more than $300,000 to six organizations to support the prevention of violence against Indigenous women and girlsThe Government of Canada is providing over $15.7M to the Yukon Territory in 2017 through the Gas Tax Fund. Whitehorse City Council has awarded a $39M contract to Ketza Construction to build a new operations building. The new building is expected to be completed in spring 2019.According to the Yukon Geological Survey, mining exploration and development expenditures in Yukon rose from $57M in 2016 to $120M this year. This increase is largely due to the rise in base metal prices and strong interest from major gold mining companies to conduct exploration in the territory.
The Taku Gold Corporation has acquired four properties from Golden Predator Mining Corporation in Yukon. The company plans to start exploratory drilling this September.

Remediation at the abandoned Faro mine site is expected to start in 2022, costing over $500M, and will take 10 to 15 years to complete. The site currently has 40 to 50 workers, and the project managers expect to add 50 to 75 people for the upcoming work.Rockhaven Resources Ltd. has started its 2017 exploration program at the Klaza gold property in southern Yukon. The program will include diamond drilling, geophysical surveys, soil geochemical sampling and metallurgical test work.
Comstock Metals Ltd. plans to run a multi-pronged 2017 exploration program that will include mapping, sampling and diamond drilling at its QV Gold Project near Dawson CityArcus Development Group Inc. expects to start the 2017 exploration program at its Dan Man property in late July. Groundtruth is a Yukon-based company that specialize in exploration activities within the Territory.
Metallic Minerals Corp. has started a $1.5M exploration program at its Keno Silver Project. The first phase of work will consist of targeted geophysical and geochemical surveys followed by a drilling program.ATAC Resources Ltd. has started diamond drilling at its Osiris Gold Project. Geophysical surveys and possible additional drilling are also planned for the 2017 exploration program.White Gold Corp. has started a drilling program on its properties south of Dawson City. The program is being managed by Ground Truth Exploration who will provide daily geologic, geochemical and structural interpretation to guide the drill programs.
K2 Gold Corporation has started an exploration program and a diamond drilling program at its Wels Gold Property located in west-central Yukon TerritoryPacific Ridge Exploration Ltd. is conducting detailed sampling and prospecting programs at its Gold Cap and Eureka Dome gold properties, south of Dawson CityThe Government of Yukon is providing $333,000 to ten museums to preserve and interpret their collectionsThe Government of Canada is providing approximately $50.8M to improve access to services in French for Francophone communities in Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The funding runs from 2017 to 2020.
The Government of Yukon has approved 21 placer projects and 38 hard rock projects to receive $1.6M in funding through the Yukon Mineral Exploration Program. The funding is expected to leverage an additional $3.7M of spending by the grant recipients.Goldcorp Inc. expects that its Coffee Gold Mine near Dawson City, if approved, would employ about 400 workers and have a lifespan of approximately 10 years. The company expects that an operational mine is at least four years away.Ground Truth Exploration, a Dawson City-based mineral exploration company, expects to have about 150 people in the field this summer, working on projects in Yukon, Nunavut and Newfoundland and Labrador

The Department of Education accounts for 135.71 of the new full-time equivalent employees.White Gold Corp has started its 2017 exploration program in the White Gold District. The first four homes are expected to be completed in 2018.Capstone Mining has extended the life of the Minto Mine until at least 2020, pending favourable market conditions and metal prices. The funding will create employment for approximately 66 people.
Barrick Gold Corporation has invested $8.3M in the Rackla Gold project east of Keno City, owned by ATAC Resources. The potential total investment by Barrick could reach $63.3M, according to ATAC.
BMC Minerals has filed a proposal for a $426M lead-zine-copper mine with the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board. The company expects that the mine would employ 400 people during construction and approximately 400 during production.The Government of Yukon awarded more than $131,000 to 10 community organizations. The projects are expected to create more than 2,000 hours of employment for approximately 16 people.Yukon Gold Corp. has started a $6.2M exploration program at its Dublin Gulch gold property. Three diamond drills and a suite of heavy equipment to support exploration initiatives have been mobilized.Goldcorp has submitted its proposal for the Coffee gold property to the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board. The company estimates that the proposed US$420M mine would have a full-time workforce of 320 employees during operation.
Victoria Gold Corp has awarded engineering work for its Eagle Gold deposit project to JDS Energy & Mining in partnership with Hatch. The JDS/Hatch team is contracted to complete basic engineering and move into detailed design for the project.
The Government of Yukon is providing over $370,000 towards seven community projects. The funding is expected to create 2,700 hours of direct employment for 18 people.
The Yukon Bureau of Statistics credits large public and private sector construction projects for improvement in employment conditions in the territory. On an annual basis, the number of people employed in the territory edged up 900 in February 2017.
The Salvation Army is permanently closing its Thrift Store in Whitehorse effective April 12, 2017. The store has four full-time employees and eight part-time employees.

The Yukon Territory now has the smallest population of all the provinces or territories according to the 2016 Census. The Yukon Bureau of Statistics attributed part of the lower population growth to a slower mining and exploration sector.The Government of Yukon is providing than $186,000 to 12 community organizations through the Community Development Fund. The money is expected to create 2,140 hours of employment for approximately 31 people.White Gold Corp is planning to start its 2017 exploration program in May at its property in the White Gold District of the Yukon. The company plans drilling and survey work which is scheduled to end in October.
