    The Government of Canada is providing over $15.7M to the Yukon Territory in 2017 through the Gas Tax Fund. The money is expected to support approximately 50 local infrastructure projects across the Yukon.

    Whitehorse City Council has awarded a $39M contract to Ketza Construction to build a new operations building. The new building is expected to be completed in spring 2019.
    According to the Yukon Geological Survey, mining exploration and development expenditures in Yukon rose from $57M in 2016 to $120M this year. This increase is largely due to the rise in base metal prices and strong interest from major gold mining companies to conduct exploration in the territory.

    The Taku Gold Corporation has acquired four properties from Golden Predator Mining Corporation in Yukon. The company plans to start exploratory drilling this September.

    The Government of Yukon, the Yukon Lottery Commission and Sport Canada are providing over $1.4M in funding to support various sport and recreation programs in the territory
    According to Statistics Canada, the median total income for individuals in Yukon rose from $43,980 in 2014 to $44,800 in 2015, an increase of 1.9%. At the national level, the median income rose by 3.4% over the same period.

    The Government of Yukon and the Government of Canada are jointly providing $520,000 for affordable housing projects in Carmacks and Watson Lake
    The Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board has granted conditional approval for the Haeckel Hill wind turbine project by Northern Capital Energy. Pending final approval, the project could begin production as early as fall 2018.
    The Government of Yukon and the Government of Canada are providing $600M for improving and developing infrastructure. The funding will be available starting March 31, 2018 and will be dispersed over 10 years.
    Plans for rehabilitation of the aging Ross River suspension footbridge may be in limbo due to escalating costs of construction. The Government of Yukon has already spent more than $1.5M on design work and on stabilizing the north and south towers.

    The Government of Yukon and the Government of Canada are jointly providing $6.1M for two water and wastewater improvement projects in Haines Junction
    Demolition is underway at the old F.H. Collins High School in Whitehorse. Contaminated soil at the site is pushing back the timeline for completion of the work.
    The Government of Yukon is relying on fly-in contract nurses as it attempts to deal with a nursing shortage in remote communities. Hiring and retention of nurses is a problem across the territory.

    Remediation at the abandoned Faro mine site is expected to start in 2022, costing over $500M, and will take 10 to 15 years to complete. The site currently has 40 to 50 workers, and the project managers expect to add 50 to 75 people for the upcoming work.
    Rockhaven Resources Ltd. has started its 2017 exploration program at the Klaza gold property in southern Yukon. The program will include diamond drilling, geophysical surveys, soil geochemical sampling and metallurgical test work.

    Comstock Metals Ltd. plans to run a multi-pronged 2017 exploration program that will include mapping, sampling and diamond drilling at its QV Gold Project near Dawson City
    Arcus Development Group Inc. expects to start the 2017 exploration program at its Dan Man property in late July. The program includes drilling, soil sampling, geological mapping and prospecting.
    The Government of Yukon is providing support from the Community Development Fund for 13 projects that will create employment and promote social, cultural and economic benefits
  • Week of Jun 12 - Jun 16, 2017

    The Government of Yukon is expecting to pay $1.8M to cover the cost of full abandonment of a gas well at the Kotaneelee gas processing plant. The original owner of the site left a security deposit which covers part of the $2.4M total cost.
    Strikepoint Gold Inc. has started exploration work on the Mahtin Project near Mayo. Sample drilling is expected to follow the initial survey work.
    Goldstrike Resources Ltd. and Newmont Mining have established two fly-in camps to host their technical teams and drilling crews as they start exploration on the Plateau Property
    K2 Gold Corporation has started a diamond drill program at its Wels Gold Property. The company also has plans for exploration programs at three additional properties in the Yukon.
    The Government of Yukon and City of Whitehorse are working together to apply the Business Incentive Program to the municipal operations building project. The program will ensure local labour, apprentices, youth and manufactured materials are used.
    StrikePoint Gold Inc. has engaged Groundtruth Exploration and their Drones to Drill program, to execute its 2017 Yukon exploration program. Groundtruth is a Yukon-based company that specialize in exploration activities within the Territory.

    Metallic Minerals Corp. has started a $1.5M exploration program at its Keno Silver Project. The first phase of work will consist of targeted geophysical and geochemical surveys followed by a drilling program.
    ATAC Resources Ltd. has started diamond drilling at its Osiris Gold Project. Geophysical surveys and possible additional drilling are also planned for the 2017 exploration program.
    White Gold Corp. has started a drilling program on its properties south of Dawson City. The program is being managed by Ground Truth Exploration who will provide daily geologic, geochemical and structural interpretation to guide the drill programs.

    K2 Gold Corporation has started an exploration program and a diamond drilling program at its Wels Gold Property located in west-central Yukon Territory
    Pacific Ridge Exploration Ltd. is conducting detailed sampling and prospecting programs at its Gold Cap and Eureka Dome gold properties, south of Dawson City
    The Government of Yukon is providing $333,000 to ten museums to preserve and interpret their collections
    The Government of Canada is providing approximately $50.8M to improve access to services in French for Francophone communities in Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The funding runs from 2017 to 2020.
  • Week of May 22 - May 26, 2017

    The Government of Yukon has approved 21 placer projects and 38 hard rock projects to receive $1.6M in funding through the Yukon Mineral Exploration Program. The funding is expected to leverage an additional $3.7M of spending by the grant recipients.
    Goldcorp Inc. expects that its Coffee Gold Mine near Dawson City, if approved, would employ about 400 workers and have a lifespan of approximately 10 years. The company expects that an operational mine is at least four years away.
    Ground Truth Exploration, a Dawson City-based mineral exploration company, expects to have about 150 people in the field this summer, working on projects in Yukon, Nunavut and Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Week of May 15 - May 19, 2017

    The Government of Yukon is planning to add 201.75 full-time equivalent positions to the public service in 2017-18. The Department of Education accounts for 135.71 of the new full-time equivalent employees.
    White Gold Corp has started its 2017 exploration program in the White Gold District. Exploration activities including soil sampling, geologic mapping/prospecting, drone surveys and drilling.
    Goldstrike Resources and Newmont Mining Corp are starting a multi-faceted gold exploration program in June 2017 at the Plateau Property in central Yukon
    The Carcross-Tagish First Nation and North Star Agriculture are partnering to create an aquaponics facility that will produce vegetables and fish. The business will need between 20 and 30 full-time employees.
    Alexco Resource Corp plans to hire 40 to 50 people this summer to begin an underground drilling program at its Bermingham silver deposit in the Keno Hill District

    The University of Vienna and the Nacho Nyk Dun are releasing the Mobile Workers Guide in June 2017. The Yukon Chamber of Mines has endorsed the publication which is aimed at mining camp workers.

    The Government of Yukon and the Government of Canada are jointly providing $0.5M to Habitat for Humanity to start work on two 4-plexes for eight low income families in Whitehorse. The first four homes are expected to be completed in 2018.
    Capstone Mining has extended the life of the Minto Mine until at least 2020, pending favourable market conditions and metal prices. The company had previously planned to place the mine into care and maintenance mode in December 2017.
    The federal Gas Tax Fund is providing $2.8M for three wastewater infrastructure projects in Whitehorse
    The Government of Yukon is planning to spend $309M on capital projects as part of its $1.44B 2017 budget
    The City of Whitehorse has approved an expansion to its planned operations buildings and anticipates seeking tenders for the $55M project, pending a final vote by the council
    The federal Gas Tax Fund is providing $692,463 towards four Indigenous infrastructure projects in Haines Junction and Whitehorse
    The Government of Yukon and the Yukon Francophone School Board plan to build a new French First Language high school on the Riverdale Education Reserve. The territorial government has committed $8M for the project.
    Apache Canada has decided to permanently shut down the Kotaneelee gas field in the southeast corner of the Yukon. Apache plans a full decommission of the remaining wells, the processing plant and other associated infrastructure.
    The Teslin Tlingit Council has submitted an application to the Yukon Environment Socio-economic Assessment Board to install a biomass heating system in Teslin. The project is estimated to create 28 construction jobs, and ongoing harvesting work.
    Golden Predator Mining is expanding its 2017 drill program by 100% at the 3 Aces Gold Project in southeast Yukon. The company also plans to conduct additional bulk sampling under its existing permit.

    Northern Energy Capital of Whitehorse has filed a wind generation proposal with the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board. Construction of the $14M project is expected to start in the first quarter of 2018, pending approvals
    Alexco Resource Corp. plans to have a workforce of about 40 staff at its Keno Hill Silver District mine this summer, with continued surface exploration estimated at $3M and the underground work estimated at $2M
    The Government of Yukon has expanded the eligibility criteria for its five film funding programs to include digital media projects
    Victoria Gold Corp. has recently established a camp at its Eagle Gold Project site to support construction and operation of the mine. A fourth diamond drill has also been mobilized to the site to expand the 2017 exploration program.
    The Government of Yukon, Yukon College and the Government of Canada are jointly investing $3.59M to renovate and upgrade infrastructure at Yukon College's Ayamdigut Campus in Whitehorse

    The Yukon Chamber of Mines is predicting an increase in labour requirements as major gold mining companies ramp up their investments in the territory
    The Government of Yukon has committed $261,700 to support artists and community organizations involved in the literary, visual or performing arts
    The Government of Yukon is providing more than $1M to eight community organizations for construction, renovation and facility upgrades. The funding will create employment for approximately 66 people.
  • Week of Apr 10 - Apr 14, 2017

    Barrick Gold Corporation has invested $8.3M in the Rackla Gold project east of Keno City, owned by ATAC Resources. The potential total investment by Barrick could reach $63.3M, according to ATAC.
  • Week of Apr 03 - Apr 07, 2017

    BMC Minerals has filed a proposal for a $426M lead-zine-copper mine with the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board. The company expects that the mine would employ 400 people during construction and approximately 400 during production.
    The Government of Yukon awarded more than $131,000 to 10 community organizations. The projects are expected to create more than 2,000 hours of employment for approximately 16 people.
    Yukon Gold Corp. has started a $6.2M exploration program at its Dublin Gulch gold property. Three diamond drills and a suite of heavy equipment to support exploration initiatives have been mobilized.
    Goldcorp has submitted its proposal for the Coffee gold property to the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board. The company estimates that the proposed US$420M mine would have a full-time workforce of 320 employees during operation.

    Victoria Gold Corp has awarded engineering work for its Eagle Gold deposit project to JDS Energy & Mining in partnership with Hatch. The JDS/Hatch team is contracted to complete basic engineering and move into detailed design for the project.
  • Week of Mar 20 - Mar 24, 2017

    The Government of Yukon is providing over $370,000 towards seven community projects. The funding is expected to create 2,700 hours of direct employment for 18 people.
  • Week of Mar 13 - Mar 17, 2017

    The Yukon Bureau of Statistics credits large public and private sector construction projects for improvement in employment conditions in the territory. On an annual basis, the number of people employed in the territory edged up 900 in February 2017.

    The Salvation Army is permanently closing its Thrift Store in Whitehorse effective April 12, 2017. The store has four full-time employees and eight part-time employees.

    The Yukon Territory now has the smallest population of all the provinces or territories according to the 2016 Census. The Yukon Bureau of Statistics attributed part of the lower population growth to a slower mining and exploration sector.
    The Government of Yukon is providing than $186,000 to 12 community organizations through the Community Development Fund. The money is expected to create 2,140 hours of employment for approximately 31 people.
    White Gold Corp is planning to start its 2017 exploration program in May at its property in the White Gold District of the Yukon. The company plans drilling and survey work which is scheduled to end in October.

    The Government of Yukon and self-governing Yukon First Nations have signed a memorandum of understanding to address and resolve matters related to mineral prospecting, exploration, mine development, production, and reclamation, in Yukon
    The Government of Yukon is providing $360,000 to the Klondike Placer Miners' Association, and $375,000 to the Yukon Chamber of Mines to support education and outreach activities
    The Government of Yukon has increased its commitment to the Yukon mineral exploration program to $1.6M for the 2017-18 budget year. The program supports early-stage exploration to locate hard rock and placer mineral occurrences.
    The Crime Prevention and Victim Services Trust is providing $87,957 to five community projects in the Yukon
    The Government of Yukon is providing $300,000 annually, over the next three years, for resource road improvement
    Victoria Gold is banking on an additional $40M in capital to start work on its Eagle Gold Project near Mayo. The company estimates that peak employment during mine construction will reach 400, with the same amount of employment during production.

    Golden Predator Mining Corp. is planning to start its 2017 drilling program at the 3 Aces gold property in February. The company has kept the 3 Aces camp staffed with a small maintenance crew which will supervise the camp and site.

    The Yukon Bureau of Statistics has released data showing 600 more employed people in the territory in November 2016 compared to November 2015, an increase of three percent
    Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd has purchased a stake in thousands of mining claims in the White Gold district, south of Dawson City. The deal includes $15M for exploration work over the next three years that will see 200 holes drilled per year.

    The Minto Mine is hoping to recall Pelly Construction to begin stripping their next open pit target in the first week of January 2017, pending government approval. The recall will likely mean bringing back 40 to 45 of Pellys workers who were laid off.

    Golden Predator Mining Corp has been granted a Class 4 Mining Land Use Permit at its 3 Aces Gold Project. The permit, which is valid for five years, allows the company to significantly expand exploration, and build new roads and trenches.

    The City of Whitehorse has earmarked $39.1M from its 2017 capital budget for its new operations building. The project is subject to public hearings and approval by city council, and if approved, construction could begin in 2017.

    Raven Recycling in Whitehorse has added staff to cope with the increase in donations following the temporary closure of the free store at the City of Whitehorse landfill on April 7, 2016. The closure has also impacted the Salvation Army Thrift Store.

    Alkan Air has opened a new flight training centre at the Whitehorse airport. The centre offers a two-year diploma program in aviation management, in partnership with Yukon College.

    Golden Predator Mining started its drilling program at the 3 Aces gold project in the Yukon. The drilling contract was awarded to a joint venture between Boart Longyear and the Liard First Nation.
    Northern Vision Development closed the Edgewater Hotel in Whitehorse for renovations, with a planned re-opening in mid-April 2017
    Cantex Mine Development Corp plans to start drilling on its North Rackla Project in the Yukon by October 20, 2016, weather permitting
    Yukon College is reporting that student enrolment is up nine percent this year, following several years of stable numbers. The college is also attracting more international students.

    The City of Whitehorse awarded Castle Rock Enterprises a servicing contract for water and sewer infrastructure
    The Government of Yukon issued two requests for qualifications to design, construct and operate biomass heating systems for schools in Haines Junction and Watson Lake. A third plant is planned at the Teslin Community School.
