Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) announces a call for applications for a physical scientist position in physical ocean modeling within the Ocean Sciences Division, Pacific Region. This position will be located at the Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney, BC. The incumbent will be responsible to acquire and provide knowledge, concepts and methodologies in physical oceanography, on behalf of the DFO objectives for ensuring the conservation of fisheries and aquatic resources, as well as providing safe and secure waterways. The incumbent will also be responsible to provide scientific knowledge, data, information, analysis, advice and recommendations to scientists and managers within the Department and to other external organizations including the general public. Specific aspects of the duties include:• Contribute to research and development of regional ocean models at basin, coastal and nearshore scales based on a state-of-the-art community ocean modelling platform; • Improve the performance of existing regional models within Fisheries and Oceans Canada; • Evaluate model performance through joint analysis of model results and observational data;• Contribute to technical development for running regional models in operational forecasting mode with a setting consistent with other ocean forecasting systems within Government of Canada;• Provide external collaborators with technical support and advice; and• Prepare scientific documents for publication in the form of in-house technical notes and presentations, and contribute to writing peer-reviewed scientific articles.
