Department / Division / Section: Information Management / Exhibit Control Position Function: Receive and ensure the integrity of evidence and general property related to investigations. Key Duties:Manage, direct and control the receipt, storage, safeguarding and disposition of all property seized or otherwise obtained by police including narcotics, firearms, cash, DNA, explosives, liquor and bicycles. Maximize and improve storage capabilities. Count, track, balance and verify cash for bank deposits. Responsible for documenting, packaging and the shipping of narcotics and forensic and DNA exhibits to the appropriate outside agency for analysis. Maintain continuity when transporting exhibits to and from off-site storage. Responsible for proper handling, shipping, and returning of firearms. Responsible for registering and maintaining all firearms within the Firearms Registry. Determine correct disposition of all exhibits according to bylaws, policy and legislation. Coordinate and supervise bulk commercial incineration and destruction of exhibits by arranging access to suitable commercial facilities and transporting the exhibits to the facility. Determine how exhibits are to be disposed (garbage, recycle, bio-hazard, shredding, auction, burned). Direct and train members on procedures for processing exhibits in PRIME. Liaise with members and personnel to inform and give direction in relation to the safe and competent handling of seized property. Responsible for training/advising investigators concerning packaging, identifying, shipping and processing of exhibits to ensure that policy is complied with and the integrity of the exhibit material is not compromised and that continuity of possession is demonstrated. Review and prepare all Seized Property Management and Civil Forfeiture court orders. Responsible for compiling and sending exhibits to the appropriate outside agency and disposing of exhibits on their behalf. Coordinate payment to the appropriate agency. Other duties include: review and manage property workflow of all police members, develop, implement and maintain policy and procedure manuals, update and maintain all Pre-Prime exhibits, responsible for duplicating discs and VHS tapes for court purposes, perform routine inventory and/or audits of exhibits and the exhibit processes, when required, provide expert testimony before the courts regarding the continuity of evidence presented, research and respond verbally and/or in writing to all inquiries from the public and outside agencies, type a variety of letters, memos, forms and reports. Assist the Purchasing Officer with receiving and issuing equipment such as but not limited to uniforms, firearms, ammunition and pepper spray. Assist the building supervisor with contractors and stationary orders. Responsible for sending and accepting all departmental mail and courier packages. Perform related duties where qualified. Independence:Work is performed according to established procedures or is assigned by supervisor. Problems involving deviations from standard procedures are solved by employee and/or discussed with Supervisor.
