The federal government through CanNor is providing $550,000 to five Indigenous-led economic development projects in the NWT. The projects will create eight full-time jobs and one part-time job, as well as maintaining five existing jobs.

The federal government announced the suspension of vaccine mandates for domestic air travellers and non-vaccinated airline workers effective June 20. Yellowknife-based Air Tindi, is planning to recall non-vaccinated staff back to work.

Nunavut has reached $202.1M in wholesale trade transactions in 2021, up 24.7% compared to the previous year. Wholesale trade represented 1.2% of the territory’s 2021 GDP.

The Yukon government is providing $1.6M in funding to 52 sport organizations, 5 recreation centres and 45 high performance or elite athletes. The fund will go towards facility operations, maintenance and supporting athletes.

The federal and Yukon governments approved the BMC Mineral’s Kudz Ze Kayah polymetallic project that will generate an estimated $720M capital expenditure for the territory’s economy. The project will create 500 construction and 400 operational jobs.

The City of Yellowknife and Nunavut Chamber of Mines has signed a memorandum of understanding for mineral economic development. The plan will promote mineral development from exploration to closure.

The Government of Canada through CanNor is providing $2.4M to support three fishing projects in Nunavut. These projects will focus on fisheries research, marketing and professional training.

The federal and Nunavut governments pledged a total $201.6M to the Katittuq Nunavut Fibre Link project. The project is expected to provide residents faster and more reliable internet service. The cable will be laid in 2024 and service could begin in 2025.

The City of Iqaluit approved a contract for 5581 Nunavut Ltd. to lay gravel at the West 40 landfill site. This is a fire prevention measure after the landfill caught fire earlier this spring. The city is closely monitoring for hotspots.

Saskatchewan’s retail trade in April was over $2B, an increase of 1.4% when compared to the previous month. The growth was the highest percentage increase among all provinces.

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing support to producers through a new supplemental relief program. The new program will assist eligible farmers affected by disasters that occurred during the month of April 2022.

According to the most recent crop report, Saskatchewan producers have 98 percent of the crop in the ground, with seeding now likely completed for the year.

Canada’s Farm Show returned to Regina’s exhibition grounds for its first in-person event since 2019. The event took place from June 21 to 23 and displayed 400 exhibitors from over 50 countries

The Saskatchewan Research Council celebrated the grand opening of a new Mining and Minerals facility in Saskatoon. The new facility will consolidate operations, allow for the expansion of expertise and house roughly 90 employees.

Waterhen Lake First Nation recently purchased Waters Edge Eco Lodge, located 50 kilometres north of Meadow Lake. Those who visit the Lodge will learn how the Indigenous people of the area lived off the land.

Evraz North America laid off 170 workers in May and expects to layoff another 50 to 75 more in June at the company’s steel mill in Regina. The layoffs are said to be the result of a lack of large pipe projects.

Due to growing demand, Saskatchewan’s potash producers are increasing production. As a result, Mosaic has already added 150 jobs, Nutrien will be creating around 350 new positions and K+S Potash will be hiring 70 new employees.

SaskPower is set to begin construction on a new, $26M battery energy storage system in northeast Regina. The new battery storage facility will be able to store enough energy to power 20,000 homes for one hour and will be up and running by May 2023.

The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization is opening a new level 4 vaccine manufacturing facility, located on the University of Saskatchewan Campus. The grand opening for the facility will take place on June 28.

Effective June 20, unvaccinated federal corrections officers will be eligible to return to work at Prince Albert’s Saskatchewan Penitentiary. RCMP and other federal employees will be eligible to return to work as well.

In April, Saskatchewan’s whole trade was more than $3.3B, a year-over-year increase of 29.4%, the highest percentage increase of all the provinces.

The Government of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Humane Society are jointly contributing $1.5M to a veterinary outreach program that will serve remote and Indigenous communities.

The Manitoba Insitute of Trades and Technology has expanded its welding shop with $4.5M in funding from the provincial government. The 36 new welding stations will accommodate more students at both the high school and post-secondary levels.

The provincial government is providing $450,000 in operating funds for a childcare centre in Dugald, creating 74 new spaces. Dugald Daycare Inc. opened in 2019 and now provides care for 125 children in the Rural Municipality of Springfield.

HyLife will build a new hog barn north of Killarney following its recent approval from the Municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain. The Crown Royal Nursery 2 will house 18,000 young pigs.
