Vernon Native Housing Society has opened new affordable housing units in Vernon as part of phase two of the Thunderbird Manor building. The building offers one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom homes for Indigenous Peoples with moderate and low incomes. The Canada Infrastructure Bank has loaned the Prince Rupert Port Authority $150M to undergo a major expansion. The expansion will boost the port’s capacity and efficiency for shipping goods overseas. The expansion, known as CANXPORT, is expected to begin operating by the end of 2026.

Joseph Richard Group is putting all its 19 B.C. restaurants and related businesses up for sale as part of the process to balance its books while under creditor protection. School District 60, located in Fort St. John, is looking to hire more teaching staff going into the 2024 school year. Staff shortages have persisted throughout Northern B.C. for more than 10 years. District 60 had a substantial shortage of substitute teachers in 2023 which is expected to continue this school year. The district has also tried to hire a psychologist for several years without success.

Northern Health has announced that the Chetwynd Hospital’s emergency department is closed for May 27, the ninth time services have been disrupted since mid-April. These repeated closures are due to ongoing shortages of doctors and nurses available to work.
