People like you!This is professional archaeology work that provides professional reviews, advice, and direction in archaeological resource planning and management to operation and field staff, partner groups and other departments. An incumbent of this class provides input into City planning processes to reduce risk of impacting archaeological resources, such as capital project planning and master plan processes; reviews and provides professional advice on technical plans for City driven projects to ensure that archaeology and cultural heritage are considered well in advance and at an appropriate level. A Civic Archaeologist will provide advice on technical plans (proposals) and studies (reports) given by Archaeology Consultants; collects and maintains data useful to assessing risk of impacting an archaeological resource on City lands; as well as coordinating the selection of archaeology consultant vendors for City projects and evaluates the work of consulting archaeologists. Other responsibilities include advising a supervisor on evolving policy issues that require further attention and analysis, and supports work to update City policies related to archaeology, as needed; provides guidance and support to determine next steps in the event that archaeological material is found; develops partnerships and consults with First Nations to determine the nature of Indigenous rights and potential for infringements as it pertains to archaeological studies and/or site alternations. An incumbent will prepare and delivers reports and presentations for senior management and conduct workshops and training for City personnel and subcontractors on policies and procedures related to archaeological work. Performs related work as required.Qualifications include a Bachelor?s degree in archaeology or anthropology with a specialization in archaeology, plus considerable post-graduate training; recognized by the BC Archaeology Branch as a Field Director for the Northwest Coast Cultural Area; considerable related experience in archaeological resource management related to infrastructure or public works projects is preferred; recognized as a permit holder for the Northwest Coast Cultural Area is preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A Civic Archaeologist will have thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations governing archaeology in British Columbia; including both Provincial and relevant First Nations regulations, acts and policies; knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, methods and procedures applicable to projects or initiatives that relate to infrastructure, archaeology, planning, and land use and/or resources management. An incumbent will have thorough knowledge of applicable City objectives, policies, rules, and regulations; of project management methodologies, process, standards, and policies along with knowledge of provincial regulatory bodies, municipal staff, and other levels of government. Considerable knowledge of and experience working with Indigenous peoples, specifically the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Kwikwetlem First Nations; knowledge of and experience working with design drawings and reading of blueprints, engineering documents and the wide variety of terminology that accompany the potential types of work for which archaeology may be a requirement.
