Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of social programs
  • Interview client individually, in families, or in groups, to assess their situation and problems to determine the types of services required
  • Take authorized protective action when necessary
  • Perform administrative tasks
  • Provide counsel and therapy to help clients resolve social and personal problems
  • Plan programs of assistance for clients
  • Refer clients to agencies that provide financial assistance, legal aid, housing, medical treatment and other services
  • Provide public education and consultation regarding counselling services, issues and methods
  • Conduct social research
  • Write research papers, educational texts and articles
  • Apply for social program funding
  • Deliver presentations at conferences, workshops or symposia
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of counselling and the patient’s outcomes

Credentials

Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses 

  • Provincial certificate of registration
  • Membership in a provincial association of social workers
