The Animal Control Officer (ACO) is responsible for all aspects of the Animal Control function that PAW - People for Animal Wellbeing provides to the community. The ACO will work closely with, and directly reports to the Operations Manager in all matters carrying out such programs as assigned. The role is best suited to someone able to maintain calm under pressure, someone with conflict resolution skills and abilities, as well as the ability to effectively communicate with all community members.
The incumbent will be expected to work alone and as part of a team in order to enforce municipal bylaws, work alongside other agencies in a professional and respectful manner and may be required to work evenings and/or weekends as needed.
Although the primary role is one of bylaw enforcement for PAW on behalf of the municipalities we serve, secondary roles revolve around the department's availability to transport supplies/equipment or animals and attending public events. At all times, professionalism is expected and required.
*Primary Responsibilities:*
* Animal control and all duties involved to meet contractual obligations
* Enforce Municipal by Laws
* Completion and logging of Park patrols ? outside in varying weather conditions
* Investigative work
* Pick up stray/owned animals
* Functions and events
* Education to the public
* Creating a positive image to the public
* Cleaning and maintenance of all equipment and supplies used, in an effective and timely manner.
* Any other tasks as assigned by the Operations Manager.
* Follow all end of day procedures, ensuring that the building is suitably secured and alarmed prior to leaving the building empty of all personnel.
*Skills and competencies:*
* Experience as an Animal Control Officer is an asset.
* Formal bylaw/law enforcement education is an asset.
* Bilingualism is *required*. We service French and English communities.
* Good oral and written skills required.
* Maintain an air of diplomacy when dealing with the public and other agencies.
* De-escalation and conflict resolution, education or experience preferred.
* Experience in close working teams preferred.
* Comfort with IT systems preferred.
* Clean and full driving license required.
* The ability to be sworn in as bylaw enforcement by municipalities is required.
* Physically capable, able to manipulate/move large dogs and patrol parks on foot.
