*ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER / BYLAW ENFORCEMENT*
We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, and dependable person to join our busy department as an Animal Control Officer. The ideal applicant will have a neat and tidy appearance, a solid work ethic, thrive in a fast-paced setting, be able to work independently, and enjoy interacting with members of the public in an official and non-confrontational capacity.
Preference will be given to applicants who reside in the Cowichan Valley, and who possess prior law enforcement experience. On the job training is provided, and candidates without prior experience may be considered eligible if they possess excellent interpersonal, and verbal de-escalation skills, have a desire to enhance public safety, or have a strong background in sales and customer service.

Job details:
* Essential Services; Animal Control Officers maintain public safety.
* Animal Control is a low-level policing function.
* Preferred applicants will have at least 5 years experience in a law enforcement or investigative background such as: Animal Control, Police, Sheriff, Customs, Bylaw Enforcement, Fisheries, SPCA Inspector, Conservation, Insurance Investigator, etc.
* Applicants without a solid enforcement background may be required to attain a Bylaw Enforcement Level 1 Certificate or higher from the Justice Institute of B.C.
* The successful candidate will perform a variety of tasks related to Bylaw Enforcement including inspections, regulatory and enforcement patrol work ensuring compliance with Provincial statutes, Municipal by-laws and regulations, as well as transporting and impounding stray animals; dealing with aggressive and dangerous dogs; and carrying out related tasks.
* Brings to the attention of bylaw violators, by written notice or verbal communication, the nature of the bylaw offence and attempts to gain voluntary compliance with bylaws. If negotiations are unsuccessful, takes such actions as authorized by management pursuant to the bylaws of the municipality to gain compliance.
* Liaises, when necessary, with the RCMP, other Bylaw Divisions, Fisheries, Conservation etc.
* Serves documents on behalf of Local Governments.
* Presents evidence in court and prosecutes tickets when required.
* Addresses proactively and in response to complaints; Enforcement of all applicable Animal Control Bylaws and Provincial Legislation.
* Humane capture, control and emergency care for domestic animals.
* Provide for the care and well-being of animals housed at the Pound.
* Provide education, advice and assistance to the public.
* General administrative duties.
* Maintain the Pound in a clean and sanitary condition.
* Other duties as assigned.
Requirements include:
* The completion of Grade 12 or higher.
* Valid class 5 BC Drivers License with no prohibitions.
* Clean Driver's Abstract
* Clean Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector check
* Bylaw Enforcement and Investigative Skills Level I or equivalent.
* Attention to detail.
* Proficiency with office based programs including word, excel & email.
* Ability to write detailed reports and documents.
* Course work in conflict resolution recommended.
* The successful candidate should possess sound knowledge of court procedures and municipal bylaws; effective communication and dispute resolution skills; the ability to deal with the public and staff in a respectful and courteous manner.
* This full-time position will require the candidate to be able to work shifts that fall outside of a normal work week and may include Saturday and Sunday.
* Successful candidate required to be on call for night time emergencies for a minimum of 1 week every month or as needed.
