People like you!This is manual work of some variety entailing physical effort and agility in the performance of semi-skilled and unskilled construction and maintenance tasks. The work of this class is distinguished from that of Labourer 1 by the more complex and semi-skilled tasks performed. An incumbent of this class performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and construction of roads, pavements, and in street cleaning: acts as lead hand on road projects such as installing culverts, regrading, raking premix on extensive repair jobs, repairing sidewalks and boulevards; uses motorized compacting machine in backfilling and grading work and independently performs the more complex work. Other responsibilities include assisting in pipelaying and timbering work; breaking blacktop and concrete surfaces using pneumatic hammer and compressor accessories. Assists others in setting forms; mixes and tamps concrete; assists in concrete finishing for manholes. Performs maintenance and construction work on wire and wooden fences; performs related work as required.Qualifications include up to high school graduation and experience in general construction and maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of the methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in general construction and maintenance work. Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks requiring the use of some independent judgement and action in the construction and maintenance of public works and parks systems and to understand and effectively carry out oral and simple written instructions. An incumbent will have skill in the use of a variety of tools and have sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to permit the performance of heavy manual outdoor work in all weather conditions. A valid Driver?s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.The closing date for this competition has been extended until all positions are filled.
